First of all, this is San Diego City College. Don’t get confuse with the school across from us, San Diego High School.

Classroom Conduct

All students have the right to learn without interference from others. Faculty members have the authority to protect this right by creating and maintaining an environment that is conducive to learning. Students should be in class, in their seats, and ready to participate at the scheduled class start time.  Acts of classroom misconduct will not be tolerated, and students guilty of such misconduct may be subject to classroom and institutional disciplinary actions.

What is classroom misconduct?
Classroom misconduct is any behavior which disrupts or interferes with the learning experience. Students are required and expected to conduct themselves as mature, considerate adults. Students should conduct and express themselves in a way that is respectful to all persons. This includes respecting the rights of others to comment and participate fully in class.

Classroom misconduct includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Engaging in behavior disrupts or interferes with the learning experience. Behavior such as but not limited to talking in class while the faculty member or other students are speaking, using offensive language, creating distractions or disturbances, sleeping, and reading unrelated materials is, in many situations, considered disruptive behavior to the learning process.

  • Using cell phones, or other electronic devices that disrupt the learning process or teaching environment is not allowed under most circumstances. The use of personal laptop computers is acceptable; however, laptop computers must be used only for note-taking or activities in direct support of the course objectives. Faculty members reserve the right to ask students to shut down any electronic devices.

  • Leaving the classroom prior to the end of class is considered a disruption to the learning process and should be avoided unless exceptional circumstances arise.

Consequences of Classroom Misconduct     

Students who commit acts of classroom misconduct are subject to classroom and College sanctions where the instructor may summarily suspend the student for the class meeting when the infraction occurred as well as the following class meeting; extreme cases can result in the extended suspension or expulsion as stipulated by the STUDENT RIGHTS, RESPONSIBILITIES AND ADMINISTRATIVE DUE PROCESS.

Withdrawal from a course does not exempt a student from any pending charges of classroom misconduct.
Any of the following sanctions may be imposed by the faculty member for any violation of classroom misconduct:

  1. Giving a warning – an oral explanation by a College official of violation and possible consequences if misconduct continues;

  2. Dismissal from the remaining class time during which the infraction occurs;

  3. Dismissal from the remaining class time during which the infraction occurs, with required meeting with designated college employee (faculty member, Department Head, Associate Dean or Conduct officer) prior to returning to class;

  4. Assignment of a reduced or failing grade on an assignment, paper, project or exam;

  5. Reduction in the final grade for the course;

  6. Assignment of a failing grade for the course;

  7. Required meeting with the faculty member and/or a college official if necessary;

  8. Referral to the conduct office.

If removed from class for a second offense, or if the first offense is egregious and/or involves threatening behavior, the student will be on temporary suspension from that class pending investigation by the STUDENT RIGHTS, RESPONSIBILITIES AND ADMINISTRATIVE DUE PROCESS. Course Description

This entry level course introduces students to the Spanish language and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. In this interactive course, students learn and use the language by speaking, listening, reading, and writing at the novice level. They also examine and explore basic Spanish language structures and vocabulary. This course is intended for beginning students who seek basic proficiency in the Spanish language, students who want to take Spanish 102, and students who want to learn Spanish for their personal enrichment.

Course Objectives (SLO's)      

 Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to:

1. Identify sound and meaning in Spanish at an introductory novice level both orally and in writing (pronounce Spanish with accuracy)

2. Describe basic life situations by using Spanish grammatical structures, vocabulary, and idiomatic expressions

3. Assess the content and meaning of written Spanish works both orally and in writing.

4. Examine various themes in Hispano-American and Spanish history, art, music, customs, and general culture using Spanish language

5. Recognize spoken Spanish by completing exercises in class and in the Independent Learning Center in Spanish

6. Write sentences, phrases, and paragraphs. Write short compositions and do oral presentations

7. Speak Spanish at an intermediate elementary level as regards to pronunciation and stress, grammar, syntax, word order, and vocabulary.

8. Compare and contrast English and Spanish structure, especially as they reflect the culture and society of the peoples who speak each language. Language is both linguistic and cultural. top

EXPECTATIONS AND POLICIES 

I) Attendance and participation

Participation in class is essential and it is directly tied to attendance. Not being in class is no excuse for failing to turn in assignments and/or homework. You are expected to be present on time and for the duration of the class. Be aware that your grade for class participation means your regular active oral participation in Spanish (avoidance of English). You can have only 2 justified absent. 3 tardiness of 25 min equals to an absent. (Being late 50 or more minutes is considered an absent) The "justified" word means that you can turn in any class work you miss the day you were absent. Students will lose 50 points for each unjustified absent.  Also be aware that a justified absent means that you should let your instructor know about the dates you may be absent as soon as possible.  

If you accumulate more than 4 absents, your grade automatically becomes an “F” no matter how well you do with quizzes, exams and all in class activities.

II) Throughout the course the student is expected to:

    dot read the assigned grammar before coming to class.

    dot do the corresponding assignments and turn them in to the instructor at the beginning of class.

    dot arrive and attend class punctually.

    dot do the assigned exercises in the online workbook \ Lab manual. (This along represente 15% of the semester grade)

    dot be ready to participate in all class activities.

    dot take all the examinations on the scheduled dates.

    dot speak Spanish at an intermediate elementary level as regards pronunciation and stress, grammar, syntax, word order, and vocabulary

      III) Evaluation

      No make-up exams
      The time allocated for chapter exams is 60 minutes.  No additional time is allocated for students arriving late for the test.

      Notes

      dot Spanish, like English, uses colloquial expressions that vary from region to region or from country to country. We will learn the correct international Spanish language and limit, at this level, the highly colloquial “barrio” language.

      dot No drink beverages allowed, other than water, no food.

      dot If you know some Spanish, don't assume that you know everything. You should, as everyone, complete all assignments.  Avoid having more than 3 absents or being tardy.

    IV) Homework and Online Workbook:

  Homework and online workbook are due on the dates indicated in the tentative schedule. It is expected that all students, regardless of the entrance proficiency level, complete the workbook.  Failure to do so indicates lack of a serious intent to study for the class and the student may be dropped.  No late homework will be accepted.

    V) Oral Practice:

    There will be daily speaking activities. 

    VI) Cellular phones:

    As courtesy to the class and the instructor, turn off all cellular phones before entering the class.

    Academic Integrity (you cannot use any electronic devices while taking examinations)

    Cheating and plagiarism can result in any one of a variety of sanctions. Such penalties may range from an adjusted grade on the particular exam, paper, project or assignment to a failing grade in the course at the discretion of the instructor subject to certain conditions. The instructor may also summarily suspend the student for the class meeting when the infraction occurred as well as the following class meeting; extreme cases can result in the extended suspension or expulsion as stipulated by the Student Rights, Responsibilities, and Student Code of Conduct (Policy 3100). Excessive absences, disruptive behavior, or deliberate falsification on information are bases for dismissal from class and/or from the college for the duration of the semester.

    Make a note: The dates for the scheduled exams won't be changed. You must take all examinations as scheduled.

    Plan carefully. If you already have some plans for these days, I recommend you postpone taking this class for when you can be present for all examinations.

    VERY IMPORTANT: It is mandatory that every student be presented until last day of classes. If you fail to be present during any of these days of the last 2 weeks of the semester, your semester grade will be dropped one letter grade (regardless of points accumulated during the whole semester). This policy will be strictly enforced.

    "A" becomes a "B" "B" becomes a "C"...etc

    Plan carefully. If you already have some plans for these days, I recommend to postpone taking this class for when you can be present for all examinations and attendance.

    It is YOUR responsibility to do proper adjustments to your schedule and drop the class if this seems to be necessary.
